چکیده

Themechanical behaviorof grapheneflakesunderboth tension and compression is examined using a cantilever-beam arrangement. Twodifferent sets of samples are employed. One consists of flakes just supported on a plastic bar. The other consists of flakesembeddedwithin theplastic substrate.Bymonitoring the shift of the 2DRaman linewith strain, information on the stress transfer efficiency as a function of stress sign and monolayer support are obtained. In tension, the embedded flake seems to sustain strains up to 1.3%, whereas in compression there is an indication of flake buckling at about 0.7% strain. The retainment of such a high critical buckling strain confirms the relative high flexural rigidity of the embedded monolayer. The mechanical strength and stiffness of crystalline materials are normally governed by the strength and stiffness

Interfacial Sliding and Buckling of Monolayer Graphene on a Stretchable Substrate

Graphene, the two-dimensional carbon material, has unique electronic, thermal and mechanical properties and holds great promise for a wide range of applications such as nano-electromechanical systems, [ 1–3 ] fl exible/stretchable electronics [ 4,5 ] and nanocomposites. [ 6–8 ] In particular, with its superior electronic transport properties and high fl exibility, graphene is considered one of ...

Graphene flakes under controlled biaxial deformation

Thin membranes, such as monolayer graphene of monoatomic thickness, are bound to exhibit lateral buckling under uniaxial tensile loading that impairs its mechanical behaviour. In this work, we have developed an experimental device to subject 2D materials to controlled equibiaxial strain on supported beams that can be flexed up or down to subject the material to either compression or tension, re...

Low-Temperature, Dry Transfer-Printing of a Patterned Graphene Monolayer

Graphene has recently attracted much interest as a material for flexible, transparent electrodes or active layers in electronic and photonic devices. However, realization of such graphene-based devices is limited due to difficulties in obtaining patterned graphene monolayers on top of materials that are degraded when exposed to a high-temperature or wet process. We demonstrate a low-temperature...

Chirality-dependent buckling-driven wrinkles in graphene monolayer

It is of great significance to understand the underlying mechanism of buckling-driven wrinkles in graphene monolayer due to its applications in nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). In previous macroscopic studies based on continuum theory, the chirality-dependent buckling in graphene monolayer is considered as neglectable. However, we found that the growth of buckling-driven wrinkles in graphe...

Performance of monolayer graphene nanomechanical resonators with electrical readout.

The enormous stiffness and low density of graphene make it an ideal material for nanoelectromechanical applications. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication and electrical readout of monolayer graphene resonators, and test their response to changes in mass and temperature. The devices show resonances in the megahertz range, and the strong dependence of resonant frequency on applied gate voltage ca...
